Always Improve the Present Moment

"we are more than conquerors" ~Romans 8:37

Why do we resist doing what we know to be right? Jesus gives us the answer before he is arrested: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matt 26:41). In my mind I am gung-ho to be the best person I can be today but when it comes down too it…I fail. I choose what I know isn’t right. I’ll figure out ways to justify my behavior even though in the end lying to myself doesn’t make me feel better, it makes me feel worse.

Notice that Jesus doesn’t say “fall into sin,” he says “fall into temptation.” To be tempted isn’t to sin but it does put you in a spot you don’t want to be. Don’t overcomplicate what Jesus has already commanded. First watch or be on guard and in so doing remain in prayer. Staying in prayer is a shield like none other; it will guard your heart, mind, and lips with an impenetrable power.

If you fail to watch and pray and finally fall into temptation—not all hope is lost because “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor 10:13).

After you have endured the temptation the devil will flee from you (Jas 4:7). I promise you will not only be stronger for it; you will have a true understanding of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

That my dear brothers and sisters, is how you always improve the present moment.
