Atlas in the Rainforest Cafe

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God” ~2 Corinthians 3:5

When I was a child, I loved going to the Rainforest Cafe with my family. Eating among the animatronic animals and hearing the jungle noises felt like traveling to a different part of the world, especially for my childhood imagination. In one section of the restaurant, there was a giant statue of Atlas holding up the world.

Sometimes, as Christians, we can feel like Atlas in the Rainforest Cafe. We're carrying the weight of our world on our shoulders while navigating a place that feels foreign.

It's not wrong to feel that way, but it is a mistake to remain in that mindset. Remaining in that mindset is how the devil drives a wedge to isolate us from God and others.

When we were children we depended upon our parents to provide for our needs. As we grew older, our ability to take care of ourselves increased until we became self-sufficient, no longer needing the provision of others.

But just because we are adults, capable of taking care of ourselves, does not mean that we do not need help from others from time to time. There are just some things we can't do on our own no matter how hard we try.

Paul reminds us later in 2 Corinthians, "For when I am weak, then I am strong" (12:10). Once we accept that our weakness isn't a liability but an asset that we must give over to the Holy Spirit will we feel our Atlassian weight lifted.

"For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." -Matthew 11:30

Always improve the present moment.
