Sense or Non-Sense?

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand" ~Mark 3:24 These words that Jesus spoke are so simple yet so true. They have been used by famous leaders throughout history. Abraham Lincoln quoted the following scripture, "And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand" (25) when speaking about the divided nation during the Civil War. It was obvious Lincoln wanted a free, united country for all people but so many accused him of being a tyrant. The simplest truths are oftentimes the ones we need to be reminded of the most. The scribes from Jerusalem, who should be some of the smartest people of their day, claimed of Jesus, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons" (22b). Obviously, Jesus was doing the exact opposite of wreaking havoc like the demons, he was bringing healing instead of hurt to the people. Defying logic the scribes, accused Jesus of being a part of a house divided. If He was divided then how was His mission succeeding?

Are we missing the truth because we desire a certain outcome? Or are we making accusations before asking questions? Emotions oftentimes get in the way of logic. Jesus points out a simple truth: "And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand." Next time, we eschew reason because we're enraptured by our own sense of what's right, let's remember Jesus's words to seek the truth before we speak. Always improve the present moment.
