The Good Secret

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

“your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.” ~Matthew 6:18

As Christians, we're not supposed to have a secret life. We're supposed to live morally in all we do, no matter who we're dealing with or who is looking. But what if Jesus told us to do certain things in secret?

In Matthew 6:6, Jesus instructs his followers to "pray to your Father in secret." Why would he do so when in Luke 12:3, he says, "Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops." We must always look at the context before believing Jesus contradicts himself. In Matthew, Jesus instructs his followers to be humble Christians who serve God for the right reasons and not act like the Pharisees! In Luke, Jesus is warning the Pharisees their true selves will be exposed; despite putting on a show for all to see, they cannot hide anything from God.

So when we close our door to pray, we're not hiding from God or keeping things from others; we're practicing the good secret, a guaranteed way to stay humble and focused on the Father.

Always improve the present moment.
